Wisconsin Potato Growers Send 80,000 tons of Spuds to Sandy-stricken Areas
Superstorm Sandy has destroyed the homes and towns of thousands and thousands of people on the East Coast. In an effort to provide some relief this holiday season, Wisconsin potato growers have sent 80,000 tons of taters to City Harvest, an organization that has distributed more than 3 million pounds of donated food to about 600 soup kitchens, food pantries and churches.
The Wisconsin potatoes will arrive at a warehouse in Long Island City, N.Y. and will then be distributed to soup kitchens, food pantries and churches in the areas hardest hit by Sandy.
We’d like to thank John Hein of Sowinski Farms, located in Rhinelander, for the idea. Thanks to John, two semis picked up potatoes from four Wisconsin potato growers — Igl Farms in Antigo; Okray Family Farms in Plover; Coloma Farms in Coloma; and RPE in Bancroft.
The Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association was joined by others who helped the cause with monetary donations that will help pay for the shipping — Ansay and Associates in Neenah; Grace Fellowship in Bryant and Sowinski Trucking, LLC, in Rhinelander. Sowinski Trucking also provided the trucks and drivers.
