New UK Study Touts Benefits of Potatoes
Perhaps you knew that potatoes were low in calories (110 calories per medium potato) and is cholesterol-free, fat-free and sodium-free.
But did you know that potatoes:
- have five-and-a-half times more fiber than a banana
- and more vitamin C than three avocados
New research from the UK’s Potato Council also shows that eating potatoes twice a day can help lower your blood pressure. The study also noted that potatoes have “more of the mineral selenium than the average child gets from all the seeds and nuts they consume.” What does selenium do for you? Research indicates that selenium can help you fight bacterial and viral infections and boost the immune system to help protect against the herpes virus, cold sores, and shingles. Selenium also increases your HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) and lowers your LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol).
