Growing Potatoes Near the Arctic Circle?
Wisconsin potato growers can certainly appreciate the challenges of farming in cooler climes. Wisconsin is ideal because of our rich soils, plentiful groundwater, warm days and cool nights — just what potatoes love. But even we have to take our hats off to this Canadian potato grower who harvested 30,000 pounds of potatoes in the NorthWest Territory — just about 81 miles south of the Arctic Circle!
Like us, Norman Wells is a family farmer. “His grandchildren help pick potatoes in the field, his daughter helps him sort and does sales while he’s away, and his son helps him with deliveries.” And, like us, he’s a believer in buying local! Hats off to Mr. Wells and his family.
